Steve Moore and Jen Moore obtained a defense verdict on behalf of a landlord sued by former tenants under the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act. The jury returned the defense verdict after a 9 day trial in the Jackson County Circuit Court in Independence.
The MMPA is designed to aid consumers against unfair and deceptive practices, usually in the areas of car sales and debt collection practices. This case was somewhat novel in that the claims were made against a landlord. “This is one of the first cases, to my knowledge, in which an MMPA claim involving landlord-tenant law has been taken to verdict in the State of Missouri,” Steve Moore said. “We’re very pleased that the jury found no violation of the MMPA and rendered its verdict in our client’s favor.”
